Fillers are a Great Way to Counteract Aging

Often patients come to the office because they are starting to see changes that they really aren’t appreciating and they are looking for options to deal with them.  The bad news is there is no magic bullet.  The good news is there are options.  As we age several things happen slowly over time and then I think we hit that critical point and bam, it is like things change overnight.  Our skin is not as taunt as it used to be, we lose volume, the fat pads (especially in the cheeks) start to shrink, our facial muscles aren’t as tight, even the bone density is less.  Then gravity takes over and everything goes south. The skin drapes around the mouth, we get creasing from movement, and jowls form.  It makes us look tired and bottom heavy.
Fillers are a great way to counteract the aging process.  It might be placing filler around the mouth and marionette area to smooth out the creasing or it might be using filler in the cheeks to lift the face and shift the focus back to the eyes.
Fillers can be expensive; depending on how much is needed, so for some a facelift might be a good option.  But if you really don’t want to go that direction, fillers are worth a try.
In the last few years, and even more recently, new fillers that have come out that are really enhancing results. Here are the fillers in the Allergan family.  (There are other fillers that I use at times)
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC can be injected into the cheek to restore the lost volume.  The injection is done deep on top of the bone where it can lift.  It helps tighten under the eyes and create some lifting further down the cheek.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC is the newest filler, it can be  injected superficially into the dermis and there is an immediate hydrating effect because hyaluronic acid is so good at grabbing water to itself. It is effective for the correction of moderate to severe facial folds (such as nasolabial folds).
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC injectable gel is for injection into the lips for lip augmentation and for correction of perioral lines. It can help with the fine lines, such as around the mouth or even improve the creppiness of the skin, where it just isn’t smooth any more.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC is the good old work horse filler, that can be put anywhere and do a little of everything. If you want to start out with just 1 syringe this might be a good product.
For some there can be a delayed effect that may stimulate your own collagen to produce and may last even longer.  In the cheeks around 2 years and the other areas the literature says 12 months, depending on how much motion is in the area. The new Vollure filler is advertised as lasting 18 months.   For more information go to www.juvederm.com
Collagen is lost all over the body but currently in the US the fillers lack the density needed for the body.  There are fillers in Europe that are being used for body enhancement but it takes much longer to get anything approved by the FDA here.  It will be interesting to see if we can do something about our bat wings (upper arms) in the future?
