Fall is here and it is time to get back to our skin upkeep! Microneedling is a great way to do that and I wanted to update you on the latest in microneedling and my work. I have been reading everything I can find and trying new things.
This past year I have performed microneedling on patients with acne scars and they have all improved. I have even gotten a few hugs out of the deal! The majority of the patients I have been working on are young so I don’t know if that is a factor in how well they responded. The interesting thing about microneedling is that it is not an FDA approved procedure so we don’t have as much research to guide our treatments. There is a lot of information but also a lot of different opinions on the best way to treat since there isn’t a research trial that says – this is how often, how deep, what to use with it, what to do for maintenance, etc.
This past year, my personal microneedling maintenance schedule has been every 4 months and it seems to be managing my aging – at least on the surface! Most of the doctors I follow say that collagen continues to be stimulated for 4 months after a microneedling procedure but I read about one MD who thinks it improves for up to a year. I also had a patient with some hair loss and hypopigmentation (loss of skin color) and the needling has generated hair as well as improved the color of the skin. Maybe we just need a needle cannon so we just blast our whole body!? Is this the magic bullet we have been looking for? LOL.
Along with microneedling comes a discussion on what to use with it. The original standby was CE Ferulic by SkinCeuticals, which is a powerful anti-oxidant. One of the benefits of needling, is when you create these micro-injuries to the skin that stimulate collagen, you are also opening the skin so that products can penetrate better and contribute to healing and collagen. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been very popular. It was originally used in orthopedics for acute injuries. PRP is a concentration of platelets in the blood that are crucial to wound healing. When used for skin rejuvenation, PRP releases growth factors into the skin to expedite the body’s own repair process and activate fibroblast cells that stimulate new collagen and elastin. Your own blood is drawn, spun down and the platelets are drawn off and used. Most commonly it is massaged into the skin during the needling (this has been referred to as the Vampire Face Lift). The problem is it is expensive to do so, so I have been looking for other good options.
AnteAge MD is a new product I am excited about for both the needling and daily use. Stem cells come from fetal tissue, blood, bone, and fat. Where it comes from and how it is processed, has a lot to do with its ability to heal the skin. AnteAge needling serum is made from healthy stem cells from bone and thought to be the most anti-inflammatory. Think about how well broken bones heal, often stronger than before, unless you have osteoporosis. Bone stem cells stimulate healing: regulate the action of cells in the immune system, decrease inflammation, increase collagen and it’s matrix, and increase hyaluronic acid which all leads to increased DNA repair and healthier skin. I have tried the AnteAge micro-needling serum for patients with acne scars, hair loss and rejuvenation. When I used it on myself, I thought I healed faster and my skin was smoother than before.
I have also been using the AnteAge MD serum on a daily bases and I really like it. I have seen it help patients’ redness, and for me it has helped my texture and pore size. It comes as a two part system, similar to SkinMedica. The #1- Serum- has stem cell cytokines, peptides and antioxidants to help with inflammation, collagen stimulation, pigment regulation and moisture control. #2- Accelerator- has retinol, Vitamin E + C, B5, and Q10, all of which continue to enhance the skin. At this point I started with the Serum but will be adding the Accelerator. Between the two products, pretty much every anti-aging ingredient is covered.
This month is a great time to try microneedling. Purchase one microneedling session for the face and neck for $225 and get the chest for free.
